It is a predominantly mountainous country with a small number of flat regions at altitudes of more than 500 m. The capital of Buryatia is Ulan-Ude. Buryatia has a severe continental climate. Winters are long, cold, windless, and snowy, while summers are short and warm. Air temperatures range from +40°C in summer to -50°C in winter.

The Mountains

All the variety of mountainous landscapes of Transbaikalye you can see in the South-Muisky Range. Here you can come across an Alpine landscape with sheer rock walls and peaks hundreds of meters high, difficult mountainous passes and next to all that massive sloping tops; marshy rivers with dark water and close by – cascades of waterfalls; a dull larch taiga and luxuriant cedars. The highest mountain of the South Muisky Range is the Muisky Giant with 3067 metres of height.
